Suncrest Energy offers advanced, real-time microgrid schedule optimization, custom designed to help your microgrid function more efficiently and economically.
The Microgrid Scheduler is Your Microgrid’s Brain
A microgrid is a localized network of electricity generation, consumption and storage that can operate connected to the larger grid, but that can break off from the grid and function in “island mode” when necessary.
Because the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, biomass combustion generators, wind turbines and other distributed generators frequently utilized in microgrids are intermittent, microgrids frequently rely upon integrated battery storage. This battery storage requires a microgrid scheduler that determines when to charge and discharge the batteries.
The microgrid scheduler also handles loads that participates in demand response programs. Even when a microgrid contains no loads participating in demand response programs, the scheduler can coordinate the distributed generators and battery storage to shave peak demand.
The scheduler’s work is further complicated by the rates governing the microgrid’s relation to the utilities. Microgrids relate to utilities in one of two ways—on a distribution network level or behind-the-meter. Distribution network level microgrids are managed by the electric utilities. Behind-the-meter microgrids are typically managed by the end users.
The rates for behind-the-meter microgrids may be either flat or variable. For example, Pacific Gas and Electric offers variable rates to small general service customers while Minnesota Energy Resource offers a flat rate to its general service customers.
